Barbados to Host World Golf Championships-World Cup

Barbados has been honored by its selection to host the 2006 World Golf Championships-World Cup. This is the first time a World Golf Championship has been played in Barbados, and only the second time the event has been played in the Caribbean. The tournament runs from December 5-10, 2006 at the world-famous Sandy Lane Resort, the setting for golf superstar Tiger Woods's 2004 wedding. The tournament will be played on the challenging Country Club Course. Tom Fazio designed the 7,060-yard, par-71 course. The World Golf Championships feature top players from around the world competing in varied formats. The Barbados tournament format is the two-man team competition with two days of four ball and two days of foursomes. Twenty-four nations will take part in the tournament, which will be broadcast around the world. The defending champions are the Welsh team of Stephen Dodd and Bradley Dredge.

Barbados has become a golfing destination. The island offers three championship courses at Sandy Lane Resort, Royal Westmoreland Golf Club, and Barbados Golf Club as well as a nine-hole course at Rockley Golf Club. There's also a 9-hole, par 3 course available to the guests of Almond Beach Village.

Sandy Lane Golf Club on the west coast has three courses--Old Nine, Country Club, and Green Monkey Course. As one would expect, the Old Nine is the resort's original course layout. Tom Fazio designed the world-famous 7,060-yard, par-71 Country Club course, which is known for its challenging play and dramatic water views. The exclusive Green Monkey Course opened in 2004 for the use of hotel guests and club members only. Sandy Lane has gone high-tech with golf carts equipped with GPS to alert you to upcoming hazards and traps. Guests can receive golf tips and also order refreshments from their carts.

The Royal Westmoreland Golf Club is a private members-only golf club that extends golf privileges to guests of Glitter Bay and Royal Pavilion. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed this 18-hole, 6870 yards, par 72 course located on the 500-acre grounds of a former sugar plantation. Golfers test their skill on a course that follows the natural terrain while enjoying magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea.

The Barbados Golf Club, the island's public golf course, offers golfers a challenging 18-hole, 6,805 yard, par 72 championship course. Originally the work of Colonel J. Harris, golf course architect Ron Kirby redesigned this public golf course in 2000. The beautiful course with its mature trees, colorful flowers, and lakes is suitable for all levels of play.

Rockley Golf and Country Club on Barbados's southeast coast is the island's oldest course. The 9-hole course has alternative tees for the back nine so it can also be played as an 18-hole course. The challenging 5,610 yard, par 70 course tests the abilities of its players.

The World Cup Golf Championships is not the only World Cup Barbados will host. Next year the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 will be played on this beautiful island at the expanded Kensington Oval.

Villa of the Month: Sandalo, Barbados

You won't want to leave this magnificent beachfront villa. With its private white sand beach only steps from the villa and its refreshing pool, Sandalo offers guests an unforgettable villa experience. Gracious living is the hallmark of this two-story villa located in St. Peter Parish on the island's northwest coast.

Refurbished in 2004 by architect Ian Morris, Sandalo now offers a host of amenities from an impressive built-in bar imported from the United Kingdom to a fully equipped media room with plasma TV and surround sound.

Guests approach the villa along the paved circular drive. The villa's impressive foyer leads to the formal living room, decorated in shades of cream, beige, and brown to create an elegant gathering space. This expansive space is meant for entertaining. Numerous seating arrangements encourage conversation, while the impressive built-in bar is accessible to the kitchen to make entertaining easy. Doors lead to the poolside terrace, where guests can also relax and enjoy the wonderful pool and ocean views. Just off the living room is the state-of-the art media room with electronic games, plasma TV, surround sound, and cable.

Guests have a number of dining options: They can enjoy their meals in the lovely dining room, on the barbecue patio just off the kitchen, on the poolside terrace, or in the beachfront gazebo.

Sandalo's upper level houses four bedrooms, each with its own private bath. Three bedrooms face the back of the house and open to the balcony, offering a quiet spot for guests to take in the lovely views of the gardens, pool, beach, and Caribbean Sea. The fourth bedroom, located in the front of the villa, doubles as a study and has views of the extensive gardens and front of the property.

The lovely swimming pool is adjacent to a covered terrace so guests can take a respite from the island sun. A path leads from the pool and terrace to the private white sand beach. The beach gazebo is another shady spot. Here guests can enjoy drinks or an al fresco meal, or can simply take in the beautiful scene.

There's also a private one-bedroom guest cottage on the villa's grounds. This pretty cottage has a separate living area furnished with a pullout couch, making ideal for a couple or family. Guests can choose to cook their meals here in the cottage's kitchen or to take them with the other guests in the main house.

Sandalo offers a chef and butler as well as daily maid service. The extensive gardens cared for by the villa's gardener.

Restaurant of the Month: The Cliff, Barbados

The Cliff restaurant is considered one of Barbados's best restaurants. The Cliff's tagline says it all: "Sensuous food, sinful dessert, elegant wine, truly unforgettable." What makes this restaurant so unforgettable is its innovative cuisine and its location atop a 10-foot coral cliff. The restaurant takes advantage of its cliffside vantage point with a multi-tiered design that gives every table a view of the sea. Open for dinner only, the restaurant is truly magical at night when it is illuminated with candles and torches for a romantic ambience.

Chef Paul Owen is known for his cuisine that blends the flavors of the Caribbean with those of other nations. Diners can begin their meal with classic appetizers such as foie gras and chicken liver parfait with apple and raisin chutney and port glaze, ravioli filled with smoked salmon, cream cheese, spinach, or snails in puff pastry. Chef Owen's entrees cover the gamut from traditional dishes such as filet of beef, duck breast with wild mushroom sauce, veal chop with Dijon mustard and tarragon sauce to dishes infused with the exotic such as Thai curried shrimp and grilled snapper with three coriander sauces.

Don't miss the restaurant's sinful desserts which include such classics as creme brulee with red berry coulis, chocolate mousse, petit fours as well as baked apple crumble and white chocolate cheesecake. The restaurant has a nice wine menu as well.

The restaurant is located on Barbados's fashionable West Coast in Derricks, St. James. All of Barbados fine restaurants have a dress code and The Cliff is no exception. The Cliff prefers elegantly casual attire, which means long pants and a nice shirt for men and sundresses or dressy pants sets for women. Shorts and beachwear are prohibited.

The restaurant serves dinner only, and reservations are recommended.
