St. John Transportation

Driving

There is no public transportation available to the residential areas on St. John, so a rental vehicle is strongly recommended if you want to get around. Given the rough terrain, four-wheel drive vehicles are very popular. Remember driving is on the left. Staying left with the steering wheel on the left side (same as the U. S. mainland) in combination with twisting rough mountain roads, makes driving (and riding) very challenging.

Taxis

Taxis and open air buses are available in Cruz Bay to the popular beaches. Negotiate your fare in advance. Taxis congregate in the square opposite the ferry dock.

Ferries

Most residents and visitors travel to and from St. Thomas on the frequent ferries that travel from Red Hook (ST) to Cruz Bay (SJ). The earliest ferry to Cruz Bay leaves Red Hook at 6:30 a.m. weekdays, then on the hour. Passenger ferries to St. John depart St. Thomas from Red Hook and from Charlotte Amalie. Car barge service is available between the two islands as well; departing from Red Hook St. Thomas and arriving in Cruz Bay St. John. There is also regular ferry service back to St. Thomas if St. John gets too quiet for you. Ferries depart Cruz Bay on the hour from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. But if you really want to get away, there are ferries to the British Virgin Islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Entry Requirements

U.S. or Canadian driver's license, proof of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization papers or passport), proof of nationality for Canadians and passport and visa for all other nationalities. MONEY MATTERS - The currency is the U.S. dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted. You may want to inquire as some cards are charged a fee to compensate for the fees that the merchant must pay the card issuer. Personal checks are generally not accepted. Tipping customs are the same as in the U.S. (15%).
