Tamarind House
About Tamarind House, St. Lucia
The rare luxury of space and privacy. Room to relax, to breathe, to rejuvenate and dream. Happy memories of drinks and laughter under the tamarind tree. Long white curtains billowing in the breeze. Swimming in the pool under a full moon. Bouganvillea climbing the walls - fuchia, violet and orange flowers set against a clear blue sea and sky. Rum cocktails and fish cakes at sunset.
Tamarind House is located just off the Anse Chastanet Road; approximately 1.5 miles from Soufriere and 5 minutes from Anse Chastanet beach. Covering 8850 sq ft of space, this exceptionally large house is constructed of local stone with high greenheart ceilings and Barbados tile floors throughout. The main house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, while the separate Cottage is a master bedroom suite with its own living room, kitchen, dressing area, marble bathroom, king size four poster bed and terrace.
Tamarind House has been featured in Maco magazine and the book "Caribbean Elegance" by Michael Connors because of the large collection of antique West Indian furniture it contains.
A staircase descending from the car park, leads you into a cool, circular courtyard filled with banana plants and flowers. As you pass through the graceful arched doorway, the enormous 2550 sq ft living room stretches away before you and leads to the terrace where the tamarind tree grows up out of the tiles. This fabulous tree provides shade and coolness to the house all through the day. The living room features two seven foot settees and a very large travertine stone coffee table. The dining table seats 6-8 and the wild breadfruit trestle table can be used for large parties.
The master bedroom is 640 sq ft of bedroom and private terrace with a beautiful antique queen size four poster bed, side tables, a hand carved standing cheval mirror and small armoir. There is a walk in closet with a safe, and an Italian tiled bathroom with tub/shower and two sinks. The Piton view from the bed is framed by bougainvillea climbing up the stone walls.
The second bedroom has 415 sq ft of bedroom and private terrace with a double four poster bed, carved standing mirror, two side tables with Chinese blue and white lamps and a marble topped antique table beside the walk in closet. The ensuite marble bathroom with shower has high quality fixtures and a chrome mirror.
The third bedroom is for children and has a double and a single four poster bed. It also has its own private terrace and Italian tiled bathroom with shower.
The 35x15 foot totally private pool is situated below the Cottage and has 1060 sq ft of terrace and shade pavilion around it. The pool edge is open on one side to give uninterrupted views of the Pitons.
The house also has a professional size tennis court with a Bioflex surface and of course superb views of the Pitons as you play.

Reviews for Tamarind House, St. Lucia
We spent 7 nights at the end of August 2010 in Tamarind House. We are a family from NYC with 2 girls about 10 years old and have done pretty regular Caribbean villa travel over the last decade. Tamarind House is well equipped with spectacular terraces and views of the Pitons. The bedrooms and bathrooms were in keeping with this level of luxury but not spectacular. The staff was very accommodating and the cook was remarkably good. Despite some comments, I would not consider the beach or the town walkable on a regular basis. They are far and the walk is demanding to do as a regular means of transportation. I suggest a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The pool and tennis court were quite nice and also had good views. I found myself wishing the beach at Chastenet was more accessible. Although the beach is technically public, the hotel makes using it uncomfortable. I wish the villa came with beach chairs because dropping a towel between the hotel beach huts is not ideal. Overall, the villa was very nice and my suggestions to the owner would be to improve the ceiling fans to be sure there was a breeze and to make an arrangement with the hotel for use of the beach. Daniel
